Thank you for visiting my site.
I am a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist working with people 18 years and over, to help them manage and overcome their emotional and mental health difficulties. I worked in Cambridge, UK, for many years, providing both a face-to-face and online service, but now work exclusively online, from my home on the Suffolk and Essex border. Research shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy and it also means I can see you wherever you live.
Visiting this site was perhaps prompted by you starting to think about how to address some of the difficulties you may be experiencing. Life can be challenging and you may be reacting to a life situation such as work or relationship difficulties or you may have been struggling for sometime with the effects of trauma, OCD, anxiety, low self esteem, menopause. You may just feel anxious or depressed and do not know why.
In my capacity as a CBT therapist I will try to find a way to help you move forward. I will listen to your story, and try to understand the problems you are having. Together we will think about the changes you want to make, and work towards them using evidence-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) protocols, strategies and coping mechanisms.
What is CBT?
CBT is a talking therapy and looks at the relationship between your thoughts, behaviours, emotions and physiology. It can help you change negative ways of thinking and unhelpful behaviours which maintain the problems you may have.
CBT helps you to understand the way you perceive the world, and links this with past experiences, acknowledging and understanding the influences whilst looking at how to move forward.
CBT is about change. Genes and life experiences will have influenced the way you see things and do things, and may feel hard to change. The good news is that CBT can help you make the changes you want in a supportive way. It is an active therapy and encourages you to try things out and practice what works for you in-between sessions, in sessions, and when therapy is finished
CBT teaches you to become your own therapist: gaining insight, understanding the mechanisms which keep the problems going and learning how to manage them.
CBT commonly lasts between 12-20 sessions involving weekly or fortnightly appointments. More complex presentations can take longer.
CBT is focused and practical, providing effective and pragmatic tools to manage the difficulties you may be having. These challenges may include, how to stop ruminating and worry, how to think with more perspective, how to manage panic, how to get more energy and motivation, how to understand and stop obsessive thinking and rituals, how to manage stress and feelings of being overwhelmed, and how to deal with feelings of anxiety.
CBT is an evidence-based therapy with extensive research demonstrating its efficacy. It has been reviewed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), who recommend CBT for a number of conditions including depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety, sleep difficulties, low self-esteem, specific phobias, agoraphobia, panic disorder.
CBT accreditation by the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP) means that a therapist has undergone extensive training at postgraduate level, specifically in CBT, and continues to learn and keep up with new developments to remain accredited.
